Shepard Pie: A Comfort Food to Soothe the Soul
Shepard pie is a dessert pie made with flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and milk. It is named after General James M. Shepard, who served in the United States Army during World War II.
I learned from my grandma
My grandma is a great cook and she always makes Shepard pie. I love the smell of this pie baking in the oven and it's always such a hit when we have it for dinner. This pie is made with ground beef, onions, celery, green pepper, salt, paprika, and pepper. It's then mixed with eggs, milk, and flour. My grandma makes her own dough for this pie and she bakes it in a 9x13 inch pan.i like to add corn sometimes or make another version with jalapeno and bacon here's the recipe.
Ingredients: -1 jalapeno, diced
-1/2 pound bacon, diced
-1/2 cup flour
-1/4 teaspoon salt
-1/4 teaspoon black pepper
-1 1/2 cups milk
-3 tablespoons butter
-3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-1 large egg, beaten
-1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch pie plate. In a small skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Add the jalapeno to the bacon fat in the skillet and cook until desired tenderness is achieved. Remove from heat. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, stir together the flour, salt, and black pepper. Gradually add the milk and bring to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and bacon. Pour mixture into the prepared pie plate. Dot with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until set.
