Tony Lama first opened his cobbler's store in East Overland Street in El Paso in 1913. In 1913, he created 20 pairs of hand crafted cowboy boots using just one assistant; quickly after word spread among ranchers and cowboys in the Southwest about the excellence of his craftsmanship the demand for his boots soared.

He was born to Italian immigrants from Syracuse, New York and started his training as a shoemaker at the age of eleven. Later he joined the United States Cavalry as an apprentice cobbler at Fort Bliss where he perfected his craft and earned respect among military members for crafting boots that fitted perfectly.

After leaving the Army and moving back to El Paso and established his boots business with Esther Hernandez and their six children who all helped run the business. They were strict about their quality not mass-producing their boots and keeping an inventory of each person's measurements of each foot to ensure that every pair of boots was custom-made for each customer.

Ariat
