It is that time again -- report card time.Eye On Hockey is breaking the 2014-15 season down into quarters and grading each one of them independently, much like the ones you received as a kid during your school days. We graded the first quarter of the season just before Thanksgiving, and with nearly every team in the league having already reached the 40-game mark, it is time to look at how every team did during the second quarter of the NHL season. When it comes to the quarterly grades, teams are graded only how they did in the most recent quarter of the season. So second quarter grades only take into account games played between Nov. 20 and Jan. 7. It's not a full first-half grade, but rather a way of seeing which teams have showed improvement and which ones have gone in the wrong direction.Atlantic DivisionTeam1st Quarter2nd Quarter3rd Quarter4th QuarterFinal GradeACTampa Bay LightningAAB Ben Rortvedt Jersey -DBABC-C-CCBFCThe top three teams in the division seem pretty set with Tampa Bay, Montreal and Detroit holding solid leads over the rest of the pack for the three automatic playoff spot. That leaves Florida, Boston and Toronto in a fight for the two Eastern Conference wild card spots.Toronto seems to be teetering on the edge of its latest collapse, and seemed to try and get out ahead of that by making a coaching change this week before things really fly off the rails. The team that really might be one to watch here is Florida, a young, up-and-coming team that has some tremendous young talent with and Aaron Ekblad, and a No. 1 goalie in that is having a magnificent season in net. As of Wednesday they are only one point out of a wild card spot but still have three games in hand on Toronto and Boston. After an embarra sing first quarter of the season, Buffalo actually looked like an NHL team at times over the past 20 games. Almost too much like one if you're a Sabres fan and hoping for Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel to come to town next season.Prize Pupil: Tyler Johnson, Tampa Bay LightningWho is the leading scorer for the Tampa Bay Lighting? No, it's not Steven Stamkos, it's former undrafted free agent Tyler Johnson. And not only is he the leading scorer for one of the best teams in the league, he is one of the leading scorers in the entire NHL, sitting third in the league as of Wednesday with 45 points in 41 games. He is incredibly consistent, he draws penalties, and he has simply been their best player from the start. Most Disappointing:Boston BruinsWhat else can you say at this point about the Bruins? Once the cla s of the NHL's Eastern Conference, the Bruins are now in a position where they are in a fight just to simply make the playoffs. The offense has completely imploded, the combination of injuries on defense and the preseason trade of , plus an off year from starting goaltender has dropped the Bruins down the conference standings. They need offense, and they need a lot of it. Fast. Metropolitan DivisionTeam1st Quarter2nd Quarter3rd Quarter4th QuarterFinal GradeAB+AAB-ACADDCCDFDB-The Metropolitan Division basically breaks down into the three groups at this point. At the top you have the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders fighting for the top spot. Then you have The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals fighting for the third spot. Then you have everybody else. The Rangers and Capitals have both been playing great hockey through the second quarter of the season, and if nothing else they are a great le son in how difficult it is to make up points in the standings as the season progre ses. New York is 13-4-0 in its past 17 games and is still in the same spot in the division standings it was a month-and-a-half ago.New Jersey fired coach Pete DeBoer in the second quarter and is going forward, for now, with the three-headed monster of Lou Lamoreillo, Adam Oates and Scott Stevens behind the bench, but that isn't going to do anything about their struggling offense. With (when he's healthy), and the Flyers have the forwards to compete, but the defense remains an anchor holding them in place. Columbus has definitely improved from the first quarter, but that start was so bad (mostly due to injuries) that it might be difficult to salvage the season. The Penguins were the team hit with major injuries recently and to their credit they still won some games and maintained their spot at the top. The one concern, though, has been the power play which has gone ice cold even though a lot of the top guys that run it have remained in the lineup.Prize Pupil: , New York RangersHe's not slowing down and seems to be on his way to one of his best season's yet. In the Rangers' past 20 games he has 21 points including 12 goals. For the season he is second in the league in goals, trailing only , and has been one of the most consistent point producers in the league. He will always have his share of criticis no matter what he does, but he has been the Rangers' best all-around player this season and is making a serious MVP argument. Most Disappointing: New Jersey DevilsThey never had a great roster, and their offense was always going to be a concern, but seeing them bad is a bit of a surprise. They have won just seven of their past 23 games and are starting to get closer to the worst record in the league than a playoff spot. It's only going to get worse if -- or perhaps when -- they trade before the trade deadline. Central DivisionTeam1st Quarter2nd Quarter3rd Quarter4th QuarterFinal GradeNashville PredatorsA-A A-BB-BBABDDCD-BAfter a peculiar start to the season in the Central, with the standings all a jumble, the results started evening out as each team hit their stride. Only one team in the division truly faltered in the second quarter. The Predators continue to defy logic by posting the best record in a truly tough division. Their offensive attack improved in the second quarter, while they remained a tremendous defensive team with an all-world performance from Pekka Rinne in net. The Blackhawks shook off a slower-than-expected first quarter to rally in a big way in the second, while the Blues slightly backslid due mostly to poor goaltending with out injured. The Jets have battled through some tremendous injury woes to maintain playoff positioning, while the Stars and Avalanche have been much improved. The Minnesota Wild was the only team in the Division to post a losing record in the Central over the second quarter (Nov. 20-Jan. 6). Their tumble, thanks in large part to poor goaltending and a series of maladies that slowed the team, has been drastic. Prize Pupil: Tyler Seguin, Dallas StarsFrom the drop of the puck this season, Seguin has been a dynamic producer. That continued in the second quarter as the 22-year-old posted 23 points in our designated time span. There were only six games of the 19 he played in which he did not register a point, while he had a multi-point game on seven occasions. The Stars are 11-6-2 since late November, but would still need a monumental effort to make the playoffs. Theres a chance, not a good one, but a chance if Seguin can continue his spectacular production. Most Disappointing: Minnesota Wild. Its hard to believe just how bad the Wild have been in the second quarter of the season. They had improved greatly in the po se sion game and were getting some scoring from throughout the lineup, but they went 7-8-5 in the second quarter. Only the and were worse over that same span in the Western Conference. With the roster Minnesota has, thats not company they should be keeping. Pacific DivisionTeam1st Quarter2nd Quarter3rd Quarter4th QuarterFinal GradeA-AB+BCalgary FlamesB+C+BC-CB+Arizona CoyotesC-DEdmonton OilersFFThe Pacific has been an adventure this year, and particularly this second quarter, but the Ducks remain on top. Anaheim is an imperfect team, but theyve continually out-gunned their opponents even when it seems like they dont have their best.Everyone else is just trying to catch up, with the Sharks proving to be one of the most improved teams in the Division in the second quarter. They are second in the division and still trail Anaheim by nine points. Vancouver has maintained their status as basically being just good enough to stay alive as the division around them grows more challenging. The Kings actually posted a losing record in the second quarter with an 8-7-5 mark and while the Flames predictably regre sed from their hot start, theyre still in the hunt. Meanwhile, Arizona and Edmonton continue bringing up the rear with the Oilers notching a mere three wins in the second quarter.Prize Pupil: , Anaheim DucksThe Ducks captain has really never faltered this season. With 27 points in the second quarter, Getzlaf showed he doesnt need on his wing to continually rack up the points. Hes top five in league scoring and is one of those rare players that can take over games when he needs to. The Ducks keep winning when conventional wisdom says they shouldn't, at least not at this rate. Having a player like Getzlaf at the top of the lineup is a huge advantage. Most Disappointing: Los Angeles KingsEveryone has seen how bad the Oilers are, and Arizona has been pretty bad, but the Kings were surprisingly below average in the second quarter. Their 8-7-5 record over the second quarter included a lot of strange games. Over the second quarter the Kings suffered a lot of lo ses to struggling teams like the Stars, Oilers, Sabres, Flames and Maple Leafs. When the offense was clicking, the goaltending went south. When the goaltending was good, the scoring wasn't. It has been a woefully inconsistent month-plus for the Kings. But as everyone knows all too well, this is the team that nobody wants to face in the playoffs. A bad stretch of the season wont change that. Yoniel Curet Jersey
